While deployed in Kuwait with the Air Force Reserves, Dave Martin & Gabe Ulibarri, who had known one another before they were sent overseas, started to think about starting a business together. They did a lot of brainstorming and meeting at makeshift coffee shops and thought, “Hey, why don't we do a coffee business.”
They already had their great branding idea for their company, which fit in very well with the coffee company. Once they got back to Phoenix, they hit the ground running by starting a business - Real American Heroes Coffee Company.

Gabe: Well yeah, we were actually deployed overseas; we're in Kuwait. Dave and I have known each other for a long time, so we've kind of had that relationship before we deployed. And then, as soon as we got there, we kind of just started thinking about what we should be doing.
So we're in Kuwait, and we had a lot of time to think about stuff. And we didn't know if we want to do apparel. We didn't know if we wanted to make coffee. So it was kind of, you know, just an idea of just writing stuff down and brainstorming.
David Johnson: And coffee, Dave, coffee was one of the ones when you started brainstorming that was on the List?
David Martin: Yeah, so we would see that we'd always meet up for coffee. We would have family send us a coffee. You know we'd always open up a bag of coffee and like ah, take us back home or like sure meeting up in this makeshift coffee joint and we decided “hey why don't we do a coffee business.”
You know we love coffee, and you know we have a great idea for a brand for this coffee, so we went with it. As soon as we got back home, we just started running; here we are today.
